About Our Community
Monastery: A Real World for Real People since 1902
Tradition and History
The religious order founded by St. Benedict has endured through the
centuries striving to meet the needs of the Church as they arose. In
the 1850's Benedictine nuns left their cloister in Eichstätt, Bavaria,
to come to America to educate the children of German immigrants. By
1900 the need for Catholic education was felt in Alabama, and Sacred
Heart Convent was founded. For many years this has been acenter of prayer
and education, and the place from which sisters were sent to staff schools
in Alabama and surrounding dioceses.
Mission
Statement
We the Benedictine Sisters of Sacred Heart
Monastery in Cullman, Alabama, compelled by the Gospel of Christ and
inspired by the charism of St. Benedict, commit ourselves to be a prophetic
witness to all through a vowed life of monastic prayer, community and
ministry.
Ministries for Today
More recently we have responded
to the changing needs of the Church and society by expanding to new
ministries. Sacred Heart Monastery, as it is now known, provides for
a number of ministries. Sisters at mission houses use their particular
talents to meet current needs. Whether she lives at the monastery or
at one of the mission houses, each sister endeavors to continue the
monastic tradition of witnessing to the loving presence of Christ in
prayer, hospitality, and ministry.
