On a cold, dreary, winter February morning, I stood on my patio and saw the variety of leafless, barren, naked trees. I imagined each tree saying, “I am cold and waiting to be clothed with an array of leaves and blossoms. Resiliency and determination are mine, for I can withstand harsh weather and other climatic conditions that come my way. Even though there is a scarcity of leaves on me, soon Spring will come clothing me with an abundance of leaves and blossoms providing shelter and beauty for others to experience.” Yes, abundance in the midst of scarcity.
Where else can one find abundance in the midst of scarcity?
– In the mom whose body is riddled with cancer, yet feels blessed by the abundance of support from family, friends, church community, and is filled with a strong faith and confidence that the Lord is in her midst. Yes, abundance in the midst of scarcity.
– In the man whose life is filled with tragedy after tragedy, yet feels blessed to receive the Eucharist which provides him with spiritual strength, comfort and hope. Yes, abundance in the midst of scarcity.
– In the grief-stricken disciples on the road to Emmaus at the death of their mentor, Jesus- the one they hoped would redeem Israel from the Romans. They invite the stranger whom they met on the road to their house to stay the night. Grief turns to joy as they recognize Jesus when he breaks and shares bread with them. Yes, abundance in the midst of scarcity.
– In the multiplication of the loaves and fish in John 6:1ff. The people had been with Jesus all day. There was scarcity of food to feed the hungry crowd. However, there was a boy who had five barley loaves and two fish. He gave these to the disciples to give to Jesus. The boy’s generosity resulted in Jesus being able to feed the massive crowd and an abundance of food was left over. Yes, abundance in the midst of scarcity.
– In Sarah, Anna, and Elizabeth who were barren. The God of surprises graced each of these women with the impossible- a child. The barren womb of each woman became fertile and life was brought forth. Yes, abundance in the midst of scarcity.
Pondering:
In your own life when have you experienced abundance in the midst of scarcity?
