Advent and Christmas Reading Group

November 29, 2021 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

During this Advent season and through Epiphany, Sister Elisabeth Meadows and Sister Lynn McKenzie will lead a weekly reading group on Zoom based on Malcolm Guite’s work, Waiting on the Word: A Poem a Day for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany (Canterbury Press: 2015).  Guite is a poet, Anglican priest, and scholar who presently serves on the faculty at Girton College, University of Cambridge. His poetry is noted for its theological and spiritual depth as well as its beauty. This particular work contains some of Guite’s poetry along with classic and contemporary works by numerous other poets.

The book is available at major online retailers.  From the publisher’s description:

“For every day from Advent Sunday to Christmas Day and beyond, the bestselling poet Malcolm Guite chooses a favourite poem from across the Christian spiritual and English literary traditions and offers incisive seasonal reflections on it. In the spirit of the season, he blends the familiar and the new, ranging from spiritual classics such as Edmund Spenser, John Donne, George Herbert and Christina Rossetti, to contemporary voices Luci Shaw and Scott Cairns. His own acclaimed sequence of sonnets for the great Advent antiphons are also included.”

The reading group will gather weekly for an hour on Monday evenings at 7:00 PM Central Time, reflecting together on one or more of the poems from that week.  All sessions will be on Zoom.

Date and time – Monday evenings at 7:00 PM (Central Time) on November 29, December 6, 13, and 20, January 3 and 10.
