Teachers for these Times: Learning from the Lives of Women Doctors of the Church (online retreat)

February 6, 2021 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Saint holding book

In times such as these, we need experienced teachers.  Four who can serve as particularly good guides for us are the four women saints whom the Catholic Church has declared Doctors of the Church. These four – St. Catherine of Siena, St. Therese of Liseux, St. Teresa of Avila, and St. Hildegard of Bingen – each lived during times of challenge:  St. Catherine during a time of plague, St. Therese of Liseux in the aftermath of the French Revolution, St. Teresa of Avila in the shadow of the Reformation, and St. Hildegard during a time when women’s voices were not typically welcomed, yet her voice cried out and was heard.

During this morning retreat we will look briefly at the lives of each of these Doctors of the Church, paying special attention to the particular circumstances of their time and place. We will then draw lessons for today from their lives and teachings.

Retreat Director: Sr. Elisabeth Meadows, OSB

  • Centering Prayer is a form of Christian prayer rooted in the ancient Christian contemplative tradition. Its purpose is to foster a deeper intimacy with Christ through the silence and stillness of contemplative prayer. This time of pandemic has led many to seek to deepen their relationship with God through this wordless prayer of contemplation. This weekend retreat is designed for those new to Centering Prayer. The participants will keep silence for the weekend, but there will be opportunities for questions and discussion about the practice. To register, please select ONE of the following options.
  • Explore the life and gifts of Hildegard of Bingen, a Benedictine visionary, artist, composer, and physician who lived in the 1100s. This retreat will include reflection on many of her visions, using her remarkable paintings and writings. We will also ponder some of her suggestions for living a deeper spiritual life, as well as enjoy music she composed for liturgical prayer. There will be time for personal reflection and some group sharing.
