Becoming an Oblate

Process of becoming an Oblate

Individuals interested in becoming an Oblate with the Benedictine Sisters of Cullman, Alabama at Sacred Heart Monastery begin the process by meeting with the Oblate Director. During this meeting, inquirers share information about their involvement with their Christian faith community, their prayer life, and their reasons for wanting to become an Oblate. Two or three visits to the monastery and attendance at the annual Oblate Retreat Weekend are required to be enrolled as an Oblate candidate. Once enrolled, candidates enter into a one-year study of the Rule of St. Benedict and discern their readiness for final oblation at the end of that year. Oblates renew their commitment annually.

2022 Oblate Retreat

Oblates pray the Liturgy of the Hours (Morning and Evening Prayer) and pray with Scripture (lectio divina) on a daily basis. These forms of prayer are the foundation of Benedictine spirituality. Oblates attend the annual retreat held at Sacred Heart Monastery in early October, during which they renew their Oblate commitment.
